[Here there is a gap in the minutes. There are no entries for October, November of December 1764, but there are minutes for those dates for the Women’s Meeting which suggests to me that the minutes of these three months were intentionally omitted when the minutes were transcribed. This was during a very confrontational time in Cane Creek Meeting and the person transcribing the minutes may not have wanted to preserve these records.  Or perhaps he felt that simply deleting these minutes was in keeping with the Yearly Meeting’s decision to overrule what the Quarterly Meeting had done. The gap in the minutes is occupied by the following report from the Quarterly Meeting about the decision of the Yearly Meeting.]

A copy of a minut from the Quarterly Meeting

From our Quarterly Meeting held at Cane Creek the 10th day of 11th mo 1764.

Dear Friends,
This may aquaint you that the matter formerly debated between Joseph Maddock and others mentioned in this meetings minutes. And this meeting having been referred to the yearly meeting, the same of which in Substance is as followes, That the Quarterly did not act safe in the granting Rachel Wright a Certificate. If the same were carried into Presedent, and that all who signed a dissenting minut – shewing a dislike to Hermon Husband being disowned gave Just cause of blame. Yet nevertheless it is their [opinion] that the minut of this meeting, Rendering said friends Incapable of being active members in discipline ought to be Reversed, which this meeting Complys with. And desires you to proceed in reversing such minut or minutes in your meeting as hath been heretofore made to restrict such friends, and that agreeable to the advice of the yearly meeting,  We may each of us, labour for a meek and forgiving spirit so that what has happened may be done away.

  1. The originals of these minutes are housed at the Quaker Collection at Guilford College in the Hege Library (digital images of which are also available to Ancestry.com subscribers). I typed these from copies made at Guilford College and I sincerely appreciate and acknowledge Guilford's outstanding role in preserving this heritage.

These minutes are copied verbatim with original spellings as best I could determine them. Where no minutes are listed for some of the meetings, those omissions are in the original.

Persons especially interested in Cane Creek Meeting will want to look at the Cane Creek Monthly Meeting Women's Minutes (which may at some later date be posted here). I only transcribed 1758 to 1771 because that is the time period of interest for a project I am working on, but the minutes start in 1751 and extend up to the modern era.

Again, super special thanks to Guilford College for protecting the heritage of the Society of Friends and the State of North Carolina.
