For the last several years, as readers will no doubt already recognize, I have focused much of my research on the Hawfields (aka Saxapahaw Old Fields). At first I was interested in that area because I own a small piece of the Hawfields - the Puryear Mill, on the Haw River about a mile below Swepsonville. Because I wanted to know the history of the Puryear Mill, I began doing title research on the property. Running the deeds backwards, as real estate lawyers do, starting with the man I bought the land from, I traced the deeds back to prior owner to prior owner. I pieced together the story of the mill back to about 1850, but beyond that time, I drew a blank. There was a major gap in the title history and the only way to fill in that gap was to start at the other end of things - to look at the original State Land Grants (and Lord Granville's grants) for this area.
I soon enough found that the Puryear Mill site was originally granted by the State of North Carolina to Samuel Hunter in the 18th century and to my great interest, I also found that the original survey of Samuel Hunter's land is preserved at the North Carolina State Archives in Raleigh! Using the survey and an architects scale (a fancy kind of ruler) I took the USGS 7.5" Quadrangle map for Mebane and sketched the boundaries of Samuel Hunters state land grant (Orange County State Land Grant Number 1717) onto the quadrangle to see its original extent. This was a pleasing exercise and because the text of the survey mentioned that the property was adjoining John Armstrong, Matthew Scoby, James Trousdale and Eli McDaniel, I looked up their land grants as well.
I quickly discovered that their original surveys were also preserved at the archives, so I could sketch their land onto my Mebane Quad as well. And furthermore, their grants also mentioned still further neighbors. By following this pattern, I quickly worked my way north along the Haw River drawing in the various state land grants from what is now Swepsonville up to what is now the Town of Haw River. And thus began an almost obsessive quest to re-draw as many state land grants on the Mebane Quad as I possibly could. But I soon came to understand that some of these state land grants conflicted with an earlier set of land grants that had been issued by the Lords Proprietors of North Carolina, way back in 1728.
Without belaboring here the whole story, one bit of research led to another until I began to understand that to really, truly understand the story of the Saxapahaw Old Fields, I needed to map out as much of these disputed land claims as I possibly could. So I began to work on a grander scale. I started mapping land grants not just on the Mebane Quad, but also on the Saxapahaw Quad just to the south and the Burlington Northeast Quad to the north. Soon my quest extended into the Efland Quad, the White Cross Quad and the Cedar Grove Quad as well.
After five years of inquiry into the original land grants of old Orange County (i.e. what are now Alamance, Orange and Durham Counties, NC) I have come to the point where I feel that I have taken my inquiry into the Hawfields land grants as far as I can given the limits of working with USGS 7.5" Quads will allow me to go. I have redrawn the boundaries of hundreds of land grants - mostly from the State of North Carolina, but also a good number from Lord Granville and also from the Lords Proprietors before him.
A few years ago, I started selling copies of my maps via this blog and I thank all those of you who have bought them. But the maps, standing alone, lacked adequate context. There was far more to the full story than I could tell simply by mapping land grants. So I started writing up a companion sheet that explained what the maps signified. Soon that sheet was a booklet. And as I pursued the issue so further, I realized that the story of the Hawfields and the maps I have created deserve to be an entire book. And further, that this book would ultimately need to be part of a four volume series that would eventually cover the entirey of Old Orange County (i.e. basically Durham, Orange and Alamance Counties).
So I have produced a volume, entitled The Land Grant Atlas of Old Orange County, Volume II: The Saxapahaw Old Fields. I call this Volume II, because I anticipate that Volume I will cover lands further to the west, including Henry McCulloh's Great Tract #11 and points northward. Volume III will cover Chapel Hill, Carrboro, Hillsborough, Efland and Caldwell and Volume IV will cover Durham, Bahama, Rougemont and Orange Factory - if I live long enough to complete all four volumes.
Anyway, dear readers, my point is this: After thousands of hours of work on the Hawfields, I am ready to go to press on Volume II. This book will include a detailed narrative of the land disputes that arose in the Hawfields, six full color detailed maps of the Hawfields land grants, covering all of the Mebane, Saxapahaw and Burlington Northeast Quadrangles, as well as the western half of the Efland, White Cross and Cedar Grove Quads. As well, the atlas includes many full color illustrations of old surveys of the area and an exploration of interesting tales of individual land owners.
Because the full execution of this project required looking at the title histories of so many properties, I also assembled many subsequent deeds and other conveyances from 1728 up to about 1815. For each land grant, I have included as much title history as I could manage to sort out (in abstracted form). The final product is to be an 11" x 17" color atlas of the entire area, showing as many land grants as possible - all of them drawn onto modern USGS Quadrangle maps, making it possible to see where the various old land grants were (and potentially allowing the genealogical crowd to visit their family's 18th and early 19th century homesteads).
As well, a full understanding of the many land grants, deeds and surveys in the Hawfields required a full understanding of the locations of old roads, fords, and other landmarks in the Hawfields. So the atlas contains a full discussion of the locations of those landmarks, including a thorough exploration of the exact location of the Indian Trading Path as it passed through the Saxapahaw Old Fields from time immemorial.
Needless to say, I have invested a tremendous amount of effort in creating this atlas, and the cost of printing in color (and in hardcover) is considerable. Consequently, the price of the finished product is necessarily considerable. But for those of you who love this area the way I do, I think the book will seem reasonably priced - especially once you see the level of attention to detail that has gone into creating this atlas. The full retail price of this atlas will be $100 (including first class postage).
For those of you who have previously purchased copies of my maps, I appreciate that you have already paid for much of the information. But please recognize that I have extended my work to some degree since the time that the previous maps were printed. Yet I do not wish to gouge anyone who is truly interested in this subject, so I hereby extend the following offer:
Anyone who has previous paid for my maps in the Early Land Claims series (and anyone who orders a copy of The Land Grant Atlas of Old Orange County, Volume II: The Saxapahaw Old Fields in the next few weeks before the book actually goes to press) can purchase a copy of the 102 page, hardcover, full-color, first edition, first printing of the Atlas for $75 (including first class postage). The first (and perhaps only) printing will be only 100 copies. The atlas is to be printed on high quality acid-free, archival-quality paper and will be, if I may humbly say so, a landmark work on the history, geography and genealogy of the land and early residents of the Hawfields. To place an advance order for your own copy of this book, please send a check for $75 to:
Mark Chilton
203 Ashe Street
Carrboro, NC 27510
The book will go to press before the end of October, 2012 and will be delivered to you before Christmas of 2012, making this a great holiday present. The $75 pre-order price will be available from now until Thanksgiving 2012. After that time, the price will be $100.
So that genealogists out there on the internet will be able to determine whose land grants (and subsequent purchasers, inheritors etc.) are covered by this atlas, here is a list of all those whose land interests are depicted in Volume II of this atlas (names listed more than once indicate that multiple properties of that person are shown in the atlas):

In addition
the atlas includes subsequent title history for many of the original grantees,
tracing the land ownership through the following later land owners in the
Hawfields (and in some cases earlier occupants of the land as well) – all of
these also indexed as to location:

Congrats on this awesome sounding book.
ReplyDeleteMark, do you still have copies of this book available for sale?
ReplyDeleteHi Mark – I have read your blog, “Wandering Through the NC Piedmont,” and I have found it very interesting. My family descends from a man named William Smith, who married Leticia (Lettis) Holloway in Orange County in 1788. We don’t know much about him, except that he had at least 2 sons, one of whom died in 1826 in Orange County (James Smith), and one who moved to Tennessee in 1824 and lived there until he died in 1879 (Robert A. Smith). The Bondsman for William and Leticia’s wedding was named Reuben Smith.
ReplyDeleteAccording to old family records and folklore, William’s family had settled in Orange County (date unknown but previous to 1788) and lived “southwest of Hillsboro on tributaries of the Eno River.”
Do you think your map would possibly cover this area? I have never lived in North Carolina, and know very little about Orange County.
Thanks very much,
Rachelle Child
Hello! I just heard about your work from Reverend Bob Ellis. He pointed me in the direction of your 2008 book but I found and purchased your 2015 color version from Lulu. I am so looking forward to it's arrival as I am a descendant of Pioneer Thomas Thompson and his son John "The Miller" Thompson (whom I believe built the Saxapahaw mill). Oh and I love maps!
ReplyDeleteThanks again for all your hard work to build this reference.
Diana Thompson
Hello Mark I liked the info . in your reference of land owners in the land grant atlas of old orange county. Question is how detail is the ownership of the land and why was so much land lost in the period of time
ReplyDeleteWonderful information Mark....and THANK YOU !!!!
ReplyDeleteMany thanks for all of your assistance and information you've provided.....We've made some great strides with our research project....which started with your kind input.
Again, Thanks
Rich Marshall
