day of 10th month 1751. [7 Dec 1751] Then friends met together at
Cane Creek meeting house in order to hold their monthly meeting of Business.
According to direction of the Quarterly Meeting held at Little River in the
county of Paquotank, A minut of which follows:
Whereas friends
Inhabiting on Cane Creek Requested of this meeting A monthly meeting settled
amongst them which motion was Refered to this meeting. And now several friends
from them parts appeared at this meeting and acquainted friends That there are
upwards of Thirty families of Friends setled in them parts, and continues their
former Request, Which upon consideration this meeting grants their Request. And
leaves them to their liberty to settle said Monthly meeting in the most
convenient place amongst the Body.

Preparitive meeting informs this that Jonathan Williams Hath been guilty of
using bad language. This meeting therefore appoints Henry Ballinger and Thomas
Beals to visit him on the occasion in order to convince his mind of the evil of
such conduct and report their care to next meet.

produced a certificate from the monthly Meeting of Hoewel in Virginia for
himself wife and children dated the 6th day of the 3rd mo
1751 which was accepted.

Ruddock likewise produced certificates from the monthly meeting of Warrington
in Pensylvania dated the 21st day of the 7th mo 1751
Which was accepted.

produced a certificate from the monthly meet of Fairfax dated the 26th

produced a certificate from Hopewel mo meet for herself and children dated the

condemnation for his misconduct, which was received as satisfaction.

Service of Truth to the lower parts of Virginia. Henry Mayner and Thomas Thornton
are appointed to enquire into the unity of friends here with her visit and
nothing obstruct, prepare a certificate suiting the occasion and produce it to next
meeting for approbation.
Likewise Hannah
Ballinger requests a certificate in order to accompany Rachel Wright in the
same Service. Benjamin and William Beeson are appointed to Enquire and if no objection

requests a certificate to the monthly meeting of Camp Creek in Virginia in order

guilty of lying, a cheat and a sower of discord amongst his neighbours. This
meeting therefore agrees to testifie against him and his disorderly conduct.

and produce it to next meeting.

meeting recommends John Reed Jr worthy to be a member with us with which this

meeting complains of John Lamber for accomplishing marriage out of unity to a
woman which not a member with us her being timely precautioned. This meeting
agrees to minut him no member of our Society untill he suitably condemn his out
goings.
Also complains of
David Maris in that he has been guilty of taking the office of a Lieutenant.
John Wright and Henry Mayner are appointed to Labour with him in order to
convince his mind of the inconsistency of such proceedings and except they find
him in a situation to condemn his so acting prepare a testimony against him and
produce it to next meeting.

for the Women’s Meeting which suggests to me that the minutes of these three
months were intentionally omitted when the minutes were transcribed. This was
during a very confrontational time in Cane Creek Meeting and the person transcribing
the minutes may not have wanted to preserve these records. Or perhaps he felt that simply deleting these
minutes was in keeping with the Yearly Meeting’s decision to overrule what the
Quarterly Meeting had done. The gap in the minutes is occupied by the following
report from the Quarterly Meeting about the decision of the Yearly Meeting.]

From our Quarterly Meeting held at Cane Creek the 10th
day of 11th mo 1764.
Dear Friends,
This may aquaint you that the matter formerly debated between
Joseph Maddock and others mentioned in this meetings minutes. And this meeting
having been referred to the yearly meeting, the same of which in Substance is
as followes, That the Quarterly did not act safe in the granting Rachel Wright
a Certificate. If the same were carried into Presedent, and that all who signed
a dissenting minut – shewing a dislike to Hermon Husband being disowned gave
Just cause of blame. Yet nevertheless it is their [opinion] that the minut of
this meeting, Rendering said friends Incapable of being active members in
discipline ought to be Reversed, which this meeting Complys with. And desires
you to proceed in reversing such minut or minutes in your meeting as hath been
heretofore made to restrict such friends, and that agreeable to the advice of
the yearly meeting, We may each of us,
labour for a meek and forgiving spirit so that what has happened may be done
away.
