Apprentice Bonds of Orange County

In the 18th and 19th centuries, the local courts in North Carolina would apprentice orphans to learn a trade so that they would not become wards of the state. Note that when the Court used the term orphan it meant only that the child's father was dead, not the mother.

The NC Archive has many of the records of these sorts of proceedings and digital images of the semi-sorted documents are available online via the LDS Church. I have attempted to categorize and summarize them here for the period 1782 to 1802, but there are many more of these records from later years here:

[See Apprentice Bonds, image 437.] [no date] Ordered that the Clerk of this Court give notice by advertisement at the Market House in Hillsbo & at some public place in each District within this COunty that all persons within our said County to whom any orphan of colour or bas born child of colour may have been bound by the County Cour tof Orange to come into this COur ton the fourth day of the next Term & enter into Bond with Sec'y in the sum of L250 conditioned that such master of mistress will not remove such apprentice our of this County & that they will produce such their apprentices before this Court at any time when the said Court may require it agreably to an act of the General assembly of this State passed in the year 1801.
